Postpartum Anxiety: When the Worry Won’t Turn Off
Motherhood comes with a million emotions—but if your thoughts are racing, your body is tense, and your mind can’t seem to rest, you may be experiencing postpartum anxiety.
This isn’t just “new mom stress.”
This could be something more—and you're not alone in it.
What Postpartum Anxiety Can Feel Like
It’s not always obvious. You might look “fine” to others, but inside, everything feels on edge.
Here’s what postpartum anxiety can look like:
🌀 Constant worry—about your baby’s health, safety, feeding, or sleep
🌀 Feeling like you can’t relax or let anyone else care for your baby
🌀 Racing thoughts that don’t stop, even when you try to sleep
🌀 Tightness in your chest, shallow breathing, or frequent panic
🌀 Checking things over and over again (diapers, monitors, bottles)
🌀 Feeling like something terrible is about to happen
🌀 Difficulty focusing, feeling irritable, or emotionally drained
Postpartum anxiety can show up days, weeks, or even months after giving birth. It can also exist alongside postpartum depression—or on its own.
This Isn’t Just “Mom Guilt” or Being Overprotective
You may hear people say, “That’s just part of being a mom.” But there’s a difference between occasional concern and constant, consuming anxiety.
If the worry feels louder than your joy, or if your body feels stuck in a state of tension—it’s okay to ask for help.
Why It Happens
Postpartum anxiety can be triggered by:
-
Hormonal changes
-
Sleep deprivation
-
Traumatic birth experiences
-
Pressure to “do everything right”
-
Lack of support
-
A personal or family history of anxiety
You didn’t cause this—and you don’t have to carry it alone.
